Social Demokraten was founded in 1871 by Louis Pio - one of the figures behind the early Danish labour movement. From a modest political publication, the newspaper grew into one of the country's most widely read daily papers and for decades was a central voice in political and trade-union life. The poster from 1899 marks the newspaper's expansion and the strengthened position of the labour press in Denmark.
