Retro Danish advertising poster for Politiken from 1936. In the 1930s, Denmark's female swimmers were among the country's most popular sporting idols, and swimming fever reached extraordinary heights during the Berlin Olympics, when 12-year-old Inge won bronze in the 200-metre breaststroke and Den Gyldne Torpedo won silver in the 400-metre freestyle. That same year, Politiken organised De Unges Svømning - swimming courses for young talents. One of the participants was the not-yet-12-year-old Karen Margrethe Harup, who later set a record as the most successful Danish athlete at a single Olympic Games.
