Four carnivals were held in Køge - in 1954, 1958, 1963 and 1968. The first carnival in 1954 was a surprisingly large success for the organisers, Køge Tourist Association, Køge Museum and the local sports associations, which had not anticipated such strong public support. Køge's carnival tradition was part of the great flourishing of local festivals and public celebrations that characterised Danish cultural life in the post-war period.
