For generations, Gammel Strand in Copenhagen was the place where fishwives from Amager and Dragør arrived by boat and sold fresh fish directly to the city's residents. The monthly fish market in the 1940s brought customers and sellers together along the quay and was one of the last remnants of an old trading tradition stretching back to the Middle Ages. The motif captures the atmosphere of this lively corner of old Copenhagen.
